Carlos Alberto is a professional kickboxing fighter from Havana, Cuba. The first time I met him in March this year to make staged portraits. We decided, that it can be a good photo story if I accompany him during one of his fights.
On the 16th of June Carlos had a fight at the „Iron Fighters“ competition in Castelldefels in the 81kg light heavyweights K1 division. His opponent Dany Frigola was replaced by another fighter just a few days before the fight. Such change is a tuff task for any fighter because there is no time to study the competitor. Carlos new opponent was a Ukrainian experienced fighter Igor Vasiliev.
We are in the dressing room of a basketball building. The smell of Liniment is all over the place. The Liniment is used to protect the wounds from the infections. The calmness and the natural coolness of Carlos conceal his inner worries. He doesn’t talk much. His eyes are concentrated and his mind is occupied by the thought about the upcoming challenge. Carlos and his coach Luis Escudero have no information about Igor Vasiliev. They don't know yet what to expect and what tactics to apply during the fight.
Photographing fights is not an easy task. You can not really enjoy the show because while you are shooting like a machine gun you see only black, black, black. That happens because of the continuous curtain movements in the camera. Somehow I couldn't get these perfect shots as I did when photographing “Rumble In The Cage” in Bremen. Maybe it was because the fighters were too fast, or they were missing the target or I just had no luck.
