GEEKOTO X25 TRIPOD REVIEW

During Photokina in Cologne, in summer 2018 I met guys from Geekototo. We agreed, that I do a review if they send me one of their tripods.

Geekoto is an emerging small brand from China, that does photo equipment - tripods and lighting systems. As one of you might already have seen, there is a large variety of products from Chinees brands, that are competitive with the well-known brands. These are alternatives for starting photographers, but also for professionals who are not chasing the big names and want to spend their budgets wisely.

I choose to test the Geekoto X25 Defender. The tripod's price is only 145€, but what do you get? I had a few tripods in my hands and I can tell that Geekoto made this one very well. All the knobs, tubes, rubber feel well-made and with the good quality. But what surprised me the most is the head of this tripod. Usually, when you buy a tripod under 200€ you will get a badly adjustable head, so you'd better invest in a head separately. But X25 has an stable head, that moves very smoothly and has measurement units on it, so you will not have problems when you have to be very precise, for example, shooting landscapes with a heavy tele-lens.

I am not a big fan of the rotating locks, because I am much faster with the click locks. Although on the X25 you only need a slight rotation to lock and unlock the legs of the tripod, so its a matter of taste. The legs can be adjusted in three positions: normal, wide and the widest. The height is 190cm. The tripod can be also transformed into a monopod with the 200cm high.

It is a bit heavy for travels, because its weight is 2,6 kg. Although it fits well in the travel photo bag and can be used as a traveller's tripod for short trips. The reason why I choose this model is because of the horizontal 90° adjustable upper tube. Useful for product, macro shots or complicated camera positions. For travellers Geekoto has the AT24 Traveler model.

In general, it is a well-made, stable tripod for the unbeatable price. I did this test on the peak of the Montseny mountain (1712 meters), where the powerful northern wind made standing on the top uneasy and unpleasant. But the Geekoto X25 Defender protected my camera and the sharpness of the images well.

Even by the strong wind with the legs fully extended the X25 performs a stable stand.

The manual of the tripod says, that it's not exactly the right position for the extantion 90° tube to adjust, but I am fine with that adjustment too. In this position the tripod is still very stable.
